YouTube has garnered hundreds if not thousands of billions of views over the past year. But which videos were the most popular? It’s no surprise the world switched to YouTube during bans and social distancing – with 2 billion users watching videos every month.
And with over 500 hours of content uploaded to YouTube every minute, it can be a bit overwhelming. What did everyone else look at?

We all have friends who take board games way too seriously, but they do Game night stereotype are you? This hilarious video from Dude Perfect highlights some of the most irritating players you can find. The eternal dice roller makes me scream.
9) I spent 100 days in a zombie apocalypse in Minecraft … this is what happened
This stunning video shows how Forge Labs creates … and emits the mustard virus in Minecraft Try to survive for 100 days without succumbing to the impending apocalypse. The kicker? The virus mutates every 10 days after day 20, resulting in better, faster, and stronger zombies.
8) The Inauguration of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris | January 20, 2021
It’s a day we all remember – Joe Biden’s inauguration as President of the United States. The video made by the Biden Inaugural Committee documents the inauguration of the new President together with his Vice President Kamala Harris.
7) Golden Buzzer: Nightbirdes original song makes Simon Cowell emotional
Next up is America’s Got Talent an original song by Nightbirde. Her song “It’s Okay” tells the emotional story of the last year of her life, when she dealt with lung, spine and liver cancer. Needless to say, it moves audiences to tears, as does the normally petrified Judge Simon Cowell.
6) Children make fun of boys with autism, they immediately regret it
This next video by Dhar Mann undermines people’s expectations of autism – and specifically goes into how children can at times be mean to other children with autism. It’s a great way to combat the stigma surrounding the condition and show that thinking differently is definitely not to be ridiculed.
5) Friday Night Funkin ‘GETS BETTER (Part 2)
Part music video, part playthrough, CoryxKenshin takes over Friday Night Funkin, the 2020 rhythm game with some really excellent beats. It’s basically an animated rap battle with the comedy stylings of one of our favorite YouTubers. Great stuff.
4) The Weeknd’s FULL Pepsi Super Bowl LV halftime show
the NFL Super Bowl halftime show is a highlight of the year, and 2021 was no exception. This video with The Weeknd shows his complete halftime set with absolute blasts like Call out my Name, Starboy and Blinding Lights.
3) glitter bomb trap catches phone scammer (who is arrested)
This hilarious video by Mark Rober sets up Phone scammer who is about to be caught in front of the camera – Using a glitter bomb to surprise the cheater and identify him to the police. But it’s more than that – Rober goes a step further and uses his glitter bomb to help Homeland Security bring down a network of scammers. Impressive.
2) Minecraft Speedrunner VS 5 hunters
Another Minecraft video makes it into the top 10, this time Dream is trying to speed up the game while 5 of his friends are chasing him. It’s essentially Minecraft meets Dead by Daylight, with a lot more at stake. In this exciting game of cat and mouse, he starts with nothing and works his way up to tools and weapons while his friends chase him down.
1) I spent 50 hours buried alive
That’s right – the most watched video of 2021 is that of Mr Beast Buried alive for 50 hours, where he spends a total of 50 hours, well, buried in a plexiglass coffin. This insane stunt saw his team seal Mr. Beast in the clear box before covering it with earth and adding a tombstone. Absolutely terrifying.
As you can see, it’s been a pretty impressive year for YouTube, with some hilarious, emotional, and downright terrifying videos. But who was the top YouTuber in 2021?
