Welcome to the SWAC! Top recruit Travis Hunter is leaving Florida to join Deion Sanders in Jackson


It’s about to go under in Jack Town! In an unprecedented move, Travis Hunter, the nation’s leading recruit, decided to emigrate from the state of Florida and enroll in Deion Sanders and THEE Jackson State University.

On Wednesday when the 2021 SWAC Champions went to the cricket bowl, the high school graduate decided to let the world know that he had made a change of heart and committed himself to Jackson State.

Though grateful for the opportunity at FSU, the Florida native decided it was better to make history at an HBCU. In an interview with 11 alive, Hunter said, “I had a chance to change history. I mean … it’s really good for me to be the first (top) recruit to ever come to an HBCU. “

Hunter also said Sanders and the Jackson State Community made him feel welcome. “Together with Coach Prime they made me feel like I was already part of the team. Like I’m home, ”said Hunter.

In today’s social climate, HBCUs are seeing a surge in enrollments, NBC News Reports. Howard University reported a 15% increase in enrollments since the pandemic began.

“This has the potential to become our greatest freshman class of all time … certainly in the last 30 years,” said Howard Provost and Chief Academic Officer Anthony Wutoh.

As you may know, Sanders graduated from North Fort Myers High School in Fort Myers, FL and attended Florida State until he turned pro in his junior year. The Hall of Famer became one of the NFL’s top defensive backs.
