Torn note: can you still pay with damaged euros?

Torn, torn, painted, washed, burned – a lot can happen to banknotes by mistake. The question arises: is a damaged euro banknote worthless?

“No, not automatically,” says Professor Johannes Beermann, member of the board of directors of the Deutsche Bundesbank in Frankfurt/Main. The ticket initially retains its value no matter what it looks like.

Those concerned can contact their bank or savings bank. However, these are ultimately not obliged to exchange them. “Nevertheless, you can ask the bank or the Sparkasse whether they will accept the damaged money and have it exchanged at the Bundesbank,” says Beermann.
