Düsseldorf, Germany, 11/30/2021 – Superstar Billie Eilish receives this year’s German Sustainability Award for her special commitment to climate protection. The prize will be presented virtually by the German astronaut Matthias Maurer (ESA) on board the International Space Station (ISS). Both Billie and the astronaut will take part virtually in the ceremony on Friday, December 3, in Düsseldorf. The event will be broadcast live on the internet.

“Everyone is called upon to make their contribution to climate protection in their respective area – a fundamental aspect that connects the astronaut and this artist,” says the initiator of the award, Stefan Schulze-Hausmann.

As one of the most successful musicians, Billie Eilish is publicly committed to climate protection and more sustainability. As a role model for billions of young people around the world, she uses her influence to highlight the urgency of the current situation. In addition, she and her team actively try to make their tours as green as possible. Astronaut Matthias Maurer (European Space Agency) and the ISS team provide insights from orbit via social media and carry out experiments that support sustainable development and curb climate change.

The German Sustainability Award, Europe’s leading award for ecological and social commitment, will be presented for the 14th time this Friday, December 3rd. It recognizes pioneering contributions to the transformation into a sustainable future. In addition to Billie Eilish, this year’s honorary winners include the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen and climatologist John Schellnhuber. Due to the high number of COVID-19 infections in Germany, the event takes place under strict security measures in Düsseldorf.
