If there are multiple lanes on the highway and you are unsure where the emergency lane should be formed, you can use the right-hand rule. That’s how it works :
- Hold your right hand out in front of you so you can see the back of your hand.
- Count the number of tracks with your fingers.
- The large space between thumb and forefinger shows where the emergency lane should be.
This visualizes the rule quite simply: all vehicles in the leftmost lane drive left, all others drive right. This rule has even been part of the Road Traffic Act (StVO) since 2016.
The misconception that the escape route must always be formed in the middle can easily be dispelled by using the right hand rule.
