The raid director is working with Michael Bay and Patrick Hughes on the Netflix reboot of the iconic action movie

Original director Gareth Evans, Michael Bay, Patrick Hughes and Netflix team up on a remake of Evans The Raid, the iconic Indonesian action film that made Evans soar.

meeting reports Patrick Hughes will direct the remake now set in Philadelphia, while Bay and his XYZ Films will produce. Evans will be executive producer and Hughes will co-write the script with James Beaufort.

This new version of The Raid is set in Philadelphia’s Badlands, an infamous area of drug violence in the north and lower northeast of Philadelphia.

The best action movies on Netflix right now

The Raid remake will be the first time Bay and Hughes have worked together. Hughes previously performed on The Expendables 3 and later on the two Hitman’s Bodyguard films, starring Ryan Reynolds. Bay is of course known for directing the first five Transformers live action films, The Rock from 1996 and Bad Boys II from 2003, along with other classic and less classic action films.

The original Raid film debuted at the 2011 Toronto Film Festival and quickly became a cult favorite among action and martial arts fans. The film proved successful enough for Evans to make The Raid 2, which was released in 2014.

The series sparked renewed interest in Indonesian martial arts cinema, with a particular focus on the art of Pencak Silat, which led to the success of other films such as Headshot and Netflix’s The Night Comes For Us, starring Joe Taslim of The Raid / Mortal Kombat . The series also helped kick-start the careers of Evans and lead star Iko Uwais, who also starred in The Night Comes For Us as well as Evans’ first major film, Merantau.

Long-time fans of Asian cinema are no strangers to western remakes that lag behind the original, such as the live-action film Ghost in the Shell starring Scarlett Johansson. However, Evans previously worked with Netflix to make Apostle, a horror thriller after a man tried to save his sister from a religious cult on an island. So it seems Evans has some confidence in the Netflix machine. However, Hughes’ work on The Hitman’s (Wife’s) Bodyguard is widely viewed as poor to mediocre, so only time will tell if the director is capable of more with the help of Michael Bay and Evans.

Evans is also working with Netflix to direct a similarly criminal film starring Tom Hardy, though we haven’t heard much about it since early 2021.
