A new Starfield Dev Diary revealed new concept art for the upcoming Bethesda game and discussed its focus on down-to-earth, realistic exploration.

In the video diary, Game Director Todd Howard stated that the Bethesda Games Studios staff had all exploration in mind when it came to what Starfield would be about. “When you get to Starfield, everyone starts over and says, ‘What would you want to do? What does it mean for you to go into space? ‘”He said. “And everyone comes back with the same thing: I want to see what’s out there.”

But when compared to Skyrim’s epic fantasy setting and Fallout’s retropunk apocalypse, Starfield will take a different approach to how we’re going to explore. “It has a more realistic, science-based background,” said art director Matt Carofano. “This is a more down to earth game and a more down to earth environment of exploration. I think that gives us a different perspective on how we do everything.”

Howard notes that despite the more informed, scientific approach, the world will still function similarly to The Elder Scrolls games. “The mechanics of the world are completely different, but there are similarities,” he said. “I think these are the things we like. We like to play first person. We like to have all the coffee cups, we like to be able to touch everything. These moments make the whole thing believable. To be able to watch the sunset and the night – the time comes and just sit there and watch the world go by.

Howards also points out that “it’s a universe, not just a game” and how that affects the design process. The video has a ton of concept art of astronaut food and other “everyday” things that help make the world of Starfield more believable and authentic. He also discusses that culture matters and that such things as toys, bedtime stories, art, and entertainment are all intertwined with the world.

He also teases that there will be more than one moment similar to appearing from Fallout’s Vault or Oblivion’s launch dungeon. “We always have this moment when we leave the world,” he said. “I like to say that Stafield has two ‘exit moments’. It’s cryptic.”
