The last duel may have been a critical success, but it was a box office mistake. Now director Ridley Scott thinks he knows why.

During an interview on Marc Marons WTF podcastSir Ridley Scott complained about it The last duelThe box office disaster was entirely due to the millennials.

“I think what it boils down to – what we have today [are] the audience that grew up on those damn phones, ”said Scott. “The millennia” [sic] never wants to learn anything unless you are told on a cell phone. “

“That’s a rough line, but I think we’re up against Facebook right now,” he said. “This is a misdirection that happened when this latest generation was given the wrong kind of confidence I think.”

The Last Duel made just $ 27 million worldwide after debuting last month. Starring Ben Affleck, Jodie Comer, Matt Damon, and Adam Driver, the film featured jaw-dropping fights as well as poignant social commentary. But The Last Duel has so far failed to spark the audience’s imagination and fail to get its $ 100 million budget back.

Although Scott was initially concerned that Disney would undercut its historic epic, it turned out it wasn’t.

“Disney did a fantastic advertising job,” he admitted. “The bosses loved the movie … I was concerned that it wasn’t for them.”

Even so, The Last Duel was still playing abysmal at the box office. But Scott stands by the film and says the studio’s decisions were solid from start to finish.

“That’s the call you’re making,” he said of taking over the project. “That’s the call Fox made. We all thought it was a great script. And we did it. You can’t always win. I’ve never regretted a movie I’ve made. Nothing. I learned very early on to be your own critic. The only thing that you should really have an opinion on is what you just did. Walk away. Make sure you are happy. And don’t look back. This is me.”

IGN’s own review said The Last Duel is “a grueling watch and certainly not for the faint of heart. However, it rewards you with social comments that are as relevant today as they were in 14th century France … The Last Duel features several bloody, brutal fight scenes and a bitter final duel that is one of the best fight scenes from director Ridley Scott. “
