Respawn’s Vince Zampella takes on a bigger role in the Battlefield franchise as DICE GM leaves EA


EA restructures and shifts focus to expanding the Battlefield franchise. After a problematic start for Battlefield 2042. DICE Managing Director Oskar Gabrielson is leaving the company at the end of the year to take on a different role outside of EA. In response, Zampella will add DICE as Group GM to its EA Studios portfolio, which already includes Ripple and Respawn. GameSpot reported.

Zampella has been working more closely with DICE since the beginning of 2020 announced that he is the new head of DICE LA. will with plans to start an original game. Zampella’s duties at Respawn are reportedly continuing as normal, focusing on managing Apex Legends and Respawn’s unannounced projects, which may include the rumored sequel to Jedi: Fallen Order.

Rebecka Coutaz, former managing director of Ubisoft Annecy (developer of STEEP and support for Assassin’s Creed and Ghost Recon), will take over the management of DICE. Battlefield GM Byron Beede will continue to report to Zampella.

According to Zampella, EA plans to “grow significantly” the number of employees working on the Battlefield franchise. Meanwhile, Halo designer Marcus Lehto (who joined EA as Game Director in October 2021) is building a new Seattle-based studio focused on story content for the Battlefield franchise.

Ripple Effect, the studio behind Battlefield 2042’s portal mode, is also developing a new “Battlefield Experience” set in the 2042 universe.

All of this news comes as EA announces that it is building a “Battlefield Connected Universe”. The goal seems to be to develop multiple Battlefield games or other products in multiple North American and European studios. EA is keeping a low profile for the time being, but Lehtos Studio, Ripple, and DICE will all provide some level of support for Battlefield 2042 for now.

In the meantime, Battlefield 2042 only got its third update, which aims to fix numerous bugs, improve the quality of life, adjust gameplay balance, and more. Likewise, Santa Claus for some reason.
