Project L, League of Legends’ upcoming assist-based fighter, has received a brand new deep gameplay dive that shows a lot more of the upcoming game in Runeterra.

Project L was originally announced in 2019, and Tom and Tony Cannon of Riot Games Paused by Undercity Nights to show the team’s progress. They made sure that this gameplay clip is a “vertical piece” built to “improve the final look of the game before we actually create and create all of our content like characters and stages”.

While this may look like a polished demo, Tom confirmed that the game would not ship in 2021 or 2022 and that the team still has a lot to do before it is ready for release in the world.

“Our goal is to create a high quality fighting game that the FGC can invest heavily in and play for years or even decades,” said Tom. “It takes time to get right and we won’t rush it.”

Even so, much more has been revealed about Project L, including the fact that it will be a “tag team-style fighting game in which you build and control a team made up of two different champions”. In addition, the graphic style has been updated and players have been guided through a “Breakdown of a Champion’s Equipment”.

The controls are extremely important in Project L, and Riot develops them with “an easy-to-learn but hard-to-master mentality”. Another big focus for the team is netcode, as Project L is supposed to offer “the absolute best” a fighting game can have.

“We also talk a little about one of our top priorities for the game: building the absolute best netcode you can get in a fighter,” explained Tom. “Of course, we’re starting with the rollback as a foundation and adding in existing Riot technologies like RiotDirect, which do a great job of minimizing the ping for League of Legends and VALORANT.”

Riot isn’t entirely ready to give a proper release date or window for the game other than it won’t be this year or next, but it has confirmed that it’s “almost what makes a game a game.” (Core gameplay, controls, art direction, etc) but we still have things to do like create a full list of champions, design stages, add menus and UI, create ranked systems, and more. “

It will be some time before we learn more about Project L, as Tom announced that we won’t hear from them until “sometime early second half of 2022”. This will be part of their plan to “make AT LEAST two updates over the next year”.
