Pizza only in 3rd place: The most popular frozen products in Germany

Vegetables have been in first place since the start of the survey. Whether it’s peas, cauliflower, broccoli, more than 65% of respondents said they use frozen vegetables several times a month. The result may surprise some, but makes perfect sense to others. After all, frozen vegetables serve as a quick side to home-cooked meals or as a base for soups and other dishes.

And that’s not bad at all. As shown by the results of the ÖKO-TEST. Early last year, the magazine tested frozen vegetable casseroles. The result: many brands are convincing and even beat fresh alternatives in terms of vitamin content. In another edition, all frozen peas performed “very well”. The fact that all tested products actually work “very well” rarely happens. But there is a trend: In the above-mentioned test of Asian stir-fry vegetables from the freezer, all tested products passed the harmful substances test with flying colors. Even then, cheap discount fare was able to earn top marks alongside pricey branded goods.
Frozen foods are not unhealthy or bad on every level. On the contrary: frozen vegetables often contain even more nutrients and vitamins than so-called fresh products from the vegetable department. This is because frozen vegetables are frozen fairly quickly after harvest. “Fresh” vegetables, on the other hand, have a long way to go from harvest to the counter and the nutrient content decreases considerably due to the influence of light and heat.
