Two months before the start of the year, German Environmental Aid called on Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) to end firecrackers “once and for all” this year. With a few simple changes to the explosives ordinance, the minister could quickly put an end to environmentally harmful fireworks, Federal Director General Jürgen Resch said on Tuesday in Berlin. The environmental aid referred to a poll that found the majority of Germans in favor of a ban on firecrackers on New Year’s Eve.
In a representative survey by the Insa Consulere Institute on behalf of the Brandenburg Consumer Advice Centre, 53% of respondents voted in favor of a ban on private fireworks – 39% were against. Approval of a ban was 54% higher in western Germany than in the east at 50%. First, the editorial network Germany reported on the demand for environmental aid.
