New Bel Air trailer shows a darker side of the fresh prince

A brand new Bel Air trailer has arrived, revealing the darker and edgier approach the series will take on the Fresh Prince.

The new three-minute trailer shows the main character Will Smith, who moves in with his aunt and uncle in Bel-Air to get “one more chance”. The trailer reveals that it will be more of a prestige drama than a sitcom in which Will Smith, a troubled kid from West Philly, tries to adapt to life in Southern California.

The new series plays Jabari Banks, a native of West Philadelphia who will play the character played by Will Smith from 1990 to 1996. Smith himself surprised Banks with the news in a video that quickly went viral.

This follows reports from last year that Peacock intended to go in a “slightly different creative direction” with a “broad network show”. Instead, the trailer shows Bel-Air as the “edgy, premium series” it was originally supposed to be. The first teaser to feature a dramatic recreation of the original’s iconic theme song was likely a clue as to the direction of the show.

Bel-Air makes its debut on February 13th and kicks off on Super Bowl Sunday. In the meantime, you can check out our ranking of the best and worst shows on Peacock.
