IMPORTANT SPOILERS FOLLOWING Marvel’s Hawkeyes Season 1 Finale !!!
Vincent D’Onofrio, the actor who surprised fans when his villainous character Kingpin appeared in Hawkeye, has confirmed that his character is the same one who was first featured on Netflix and Marvel’s Daredevil series.
Speak with Screen rant, D’Onofrio shared not only that he played the same character – with slight differences – in Daredevil and Hawkeye, but also how Marvel managed to connect the dots between the two to make it happen.
“I think from my point of view, like a lot of Avengers stuff, a lot of MCU stuff, they tried to tie as many points as possible into the original canon, and some points are just impossible.” said D’Onofrio. “And we did that with the connection to Daredevil and vice versa. There are a few points [that] are connected.
“As on the Hawkeye show, Fisk is obviously physically stronger and can take more physical abuse. But the key to his interesting character, in my opinion, will always be the fact that he has this emotional life that grounds him, that makes everything work for me. “
D’Onofrio went on to discuss how they could sell “this character” to a wider MCU audience and how everything was about “keeping him in this emotional life”.
“We can sell this character in so many facets,” said D’Onofrio. “Historically, if we keep him in this emotional life, we can sell it. And I know the writers and producers and I and everyone who was on the Hawkeye show were all on the same page on that.” ” .
“I have to say that they are very cooperative and – not just great people, very nice – but the producers, like I said, the writers and the directors were all just delighted that we worked with, so we have this line retained. “. And I think that will keep the character interesting when I have something to do next. “
His last line is very interesting because at the end of Hawkeye’s first season Alaqua Cox’s May Lopez / Echo apparently shot Kingpin and ended his reign of terror. We don’t actually see him actually get shot while he is cutting off, however, and that definitely leaves room for something beyond the obvious to happen.
For those familiar with the comics, a certain plot that we won’t spoil here offers a possible option for Kingpin’s future and a chance for D’Onofrio to keep playing the beloved character.
In an interview with Meeting, D’Onofrio makes it seem like even he doesn’t know the true fate of Kingpin.
“I hope he didn’t die,” said D’Onofrio. “I’m with the fans, I want to keep playing that role. I hope we keep going.”
In the same interview, D’Onofrio also spoke about the unexpected call from Marvel boss Kevin Feige to return to Kingpin and his shock that Daredevil ended up doing it.
“I didn’t know Daredevil would end when it got there, I thought it would go on for a few more years,” said D’Onofrio. “There was a lot to discover there, there were many facets of my character to explore.”
Most recently, he was asked about Laura Barton’s Agents of SHIELD Rolex watch and what it meant for the overall story. Unfortunately he is “in the same boat” as all of us at the moment.
Hawkeye Premiere – All of the Easter Eggs from the first two episodes
“I’m trying to find out like everyone else,” admitted D’Onofrio. “I’m in the same boat: I really need more information.”
