Here are the winners of the Video Game Oscars

The Game Awards 2022, hosted by Geoff Keighley, has been a tradition for many years. The first awards ceremony aired in 2014 and not only chose Game of the Year (Dragon Age: Inquisition) and Developer of the Year (Nintendo) but also unveiled many new trailers and games. The Game Awards exist in this form to this day – with an ever-growing audience among the last 85 million views of the live stream.

It was that time again this year. On December 8, the show went up in Los Angeles. In a live broadcast, Keighley revealed the winners in each category, but also made plenty of new announcements (more on that soon). We’re rounding up who won coveted titles like “Game of the Year” this year.

What are the odds for “Games of the Year”?

Thinking back to 2022, a game pops right in front of our minds: Elden Ring. More than any Soulsbourne from From Software before, the intensive action role-playing game managed to reach a large audience and spark some real hype. Even players who have hardly ever put their antennas next to Fifa and Co. were drawn into the world of George RR Martin (Game of Thrones). For example, was Elden Ring as the first game for weeks in the podcast Baywatch Berlin discussed with Klaas Heufer-Umlauf – thanks to Thomas “Schmitti” Schmitt. It was predictable that From Software would get the title of “Game of the Year”.

God of War Ragnarok was one of the most promising candidates for the “Game of the Year” list. Its great predecessor already sat in 2018 as the “best game” against top players like Red Dead Redemption 2 and Marvel’s Spiderman through. Players received Kratos’ new adventure equally positively, but the delayed title defense was unsuccessful. Besides: God of War Ragnarok was once named “most anticipated game” of 2021, but lost to everyone Elden Ring.

Forbidden Horizon West, which also entered the race as a contender for the title of “Game of the Year”, could not assert itself either. Already at its appearance only a week before Elden Ring soon relegated to the background. A solid RPG, even very good, but much less spectacular and surprising than the action of From Software.

The same goes for the other two nominations. A Plague Tale: Requiem and Xenoblade Chronicles 3 are great games in their own right and have garnered great reviews and a loyal playerbase, but what against Elden Ring the land was uncertain from the start. The same applies to Wanderwhich, as an indie game, also had a particularly rough time.
