GTA V was the most watched game on Twitch in 2021

What did people watch on Twitch in 2021? Certainly not a lot of brand new games, apparently. In fact, Grand Theft Auto V was the most popular game on Twitch that year by hours.

GTA V had seen a total of 2.1 billion hours in 2021, according to the report by Rainmaker.gg and StreamElements’ State of the Stream 2021. That’s 1.3 billion hours more than last yearwhen it only reached 764 million hours.

Overall, GTA V was the second most viewed category on Twitch, after the top Just Chatting category, where streamers generally talk to their audience without playing any games.

In second place this year was last year’s No. 1 game category, League of Legends, with 1.8 billion watched hours compared to 1.4 billion last year. It followed one after the other: Fortnite, Valorant, Minecraft, Call of Duty: Warzone, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Apex Legends and Dota 2.

The most popular brand new game on Twitch in 2021 was New World, but it had only been viewed 259 million hours and was the 18th most viewed Twitch game.

Overall, Twitch this year also increased the total number of hours watched this year year over year, increasing 45% from 17 billion hours in the previous year to over 24 billion hours in 2021. Facebook Gaming saw similar growth, increasing 47% from 3.6 billion hours last year to 5.3 billion this year.

Grand Theft Auto V and its ongoing online component have been hugely successful for publisher Take-Two since it was first released two whole generations of consoles ago. In 2020, the game had its best year of sales since its launch in 2013, but despite its continued popularity, people seem tired of hearing about it. In the news, anyway. At least on Twitch, people can’t get enough.
