The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers have grappled with every giant monster in Rita Repulsa’s almost bottomless arsenal, but they have never shown their courage against the true king of monsters. That should finally change in 2022, when the Rangers themselves declare war on Godzilla.
That is the premise behind Godzilla vs. The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, an upcoming comic book crossover between IDW Publishing and BOOM! Studios. This five-part series explores what happens when Rita and her teenage archenemies enter the Godzilla universe.
Godzilla vs. The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers was written by Godzilla: Cullen Bunn of Cataclysm, with artwork by Freddie E. Williams II (whose previous crossover works include Batman / Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and He-Man / Thundercats) and colors by Andrew Dalhouse. Here is the official plot summary:
When Rita Repulsa uses an ancient artifact to put herself in a universe without Power Rangers, she finds herself in a world with aliens, Kaiju and … Godzilla! Hoping to crush this new enemy, Rita hurls her own terrifying creatures into battle. But she never expects the Rangers to have followed her into this alternate reality and the Dinozords themselves go head to head with the King of the Monsters!
Based on the cover artwork, the series appears to be set pretty early on the Power Rangers timeline, when Tommy is still serving as the Green Ranger. The variant cover below suggests that Godzilla’s throw with the Dragonzord will be one of the decisive matches in the series. However, if we have learned about crossovers over the years, the Rangers and Godzilla will eventually put their differences aside to confront a common pointy hatred enemy.
“I am honored to bring together two iconic franchises like Godzilla and the Power Rangers. I’ve been a huge Godzilla fan since I could read, and my love for the King of the Monsters has never faded in all these years. Likewise, I have always loved Tokusatsu superheroes and vividly remember watching the first episode of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers when it came out. This is a crossover that I suspect will surprise readers – but it makes perfect sense! ”Bunn said in a press release. “Writing for these characters is a dream come true for this huge, monster-loving kid at heart, and when readers pick up this book I want them to feel that awe and be amazed that these characters have been inspiring for decades! “
“It’s going to be the biggest stratospheric crossover I’ve ever drawn!” Said Williams. “It’s the combination of so many great genres: Giant Monsters vs. Mechs, Martial Arts vs. Science and Magic, with a lot of collateral destruction! I went to watch Mighty Morphin Power Rangers episodes and Godzilla movies to flood my brain space and was reminded how awesome and charming these designs are and how much fun previous creators had with their designs. I am delighted to be contributing to the long legacy of these franchises! “
Godzilla vs. The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers starts in March 2022.
