Marvel’s Eternals could have ended very differently, as an early version of the film’s story had a “really bleak” ending.
During an interview with Empire magazine, Eternals director Chloé Zhao revealed what the old heroes originally expected.
“We actually had another ending that is really dark,” she revealed. “Bald. I didn’t hate it because I’m used to more melancholy films. But I don’t think it went down well with the audience. “
“It used to end up with everyone back on the ship, thoughts erased, and just going to another planet like The Twilight Zone,” she explained. “I remember when it went black everyone was like, ‘I don’t know what to do.’ It’s also the MCU, and you want to be excited to see what’s next. “
That ending was eventually replaced in favor of the theatrical, in which Druig, Makkari and Thena board the Domo to find more Eternals. Sersi, Phastos, and Kingo are then dragged from Arishem’s return to space – allowing Earth to stay as long as the memories of the three Eternals prove the planet is worthy.
In no time at all, the three Eternals with Arishem disappear. Although the Eternals are scattered, this ending leaves the door open for their return. It’s easy to see why Marvel would be more inclined to go along with it.
Who are villains Kro and Arishem the judges of Marvels Eternals?
But it looks like it that Cameo, with Harry Styles as ErosShe would have been tied into the original, somber ending to the film.
“To cut a long story short, with this depressing ending he would be one of the eternal on this ship at some point,” said Zhao. “And that didn’t quite work out. But I wanted to bring Eros into the MCU. So I kept mentioning it to Kevin [Feige] every opportunity I had in the hallway because I love the idea that Eros is another Eternal, another Ajak. “
In the comics, Eros is the brother of Thanos – an eternal who grew up on Titan. But Zhao explains how the MCU version is different.
“He is an Eternal, and he was stationed on Titan – 10 of them were on Earth, just like the 10 Eternals, provided that Titan is also a host planet at some point. Well, if you think about it, what impact could Eros have had on the people of Titan, just as Ajak did on people on Earth? And how did that affect Thanos? “
“If you look at the comics, Eros has been a pretty nice, heartbreaking influence on Thanos,” she added. “How much does Thanos know? I love him as a character. It drives my imagination crazy when I think, ‘Why does Thanos think this way? Why is he worried about overpopulation and the destruction of his planet? ‘ Think about the origins – does Eros know about it? Perhaps if he is an advisor, like Ajak advised kings and queens on earth? It stimulates my imagination. “
In addition, Zhao gave some insights into the backstory of Eros:
“For me, the backstory of Eros is that he deserted. He said, ‘I’m not doing this anymore.’ So he kind of got that bullet you saw in his hand and he ran away and made Pip a troll. They’re like Han Solo and Chewie. Arishem was looking for him and he was just a space outlaw. That’s the character I had in mind. But I never said to Kevin, ‘Here’s the character. Let’s find an actor.’ For me it was a package deal. It has to be Harry. That’s how I introduced it to Kevin. “
Eternals opened in theaters on November 5, 2021 and is go to Disney + in January.
