With Daniel Craig giving up the role of James Bond after 15 years as a British super spy, many other stars toss their hats for the role. The latest is Dwayne Johnson who brings some unique credentials.

Speak with esquire, spoke Johnson about his unique connection to the Bond universe. It turns out Johnson’s grandfather Peter Maiva was a Bond villain in You Only Live Twice, where he played a henchman who tries to kill Bond with a mixture of wrestling moves and a katana (it obviously doesn’t work).

“Yes, my grandfather was a Bond villain on You Only Live Twice with Sean Connery,” said Johnson. “[It] was very, very cool. And I want to follow in his footsteps and be the next Bond. “

The next James Bonds that never played 007

It would be a bit of a stretch considering Johnson isn’t British and British fans are very protective of the iconic spy, but he certainly has the action for the role. One thing is certain: Johnson does not want to be a villain.

“I don’t want to be a bad guy. I have to be Bond,” says Johnson.

In the meantime, Tom Hardy is reportedly the betting favorite to be the next Bond, with Henry Cavill and Idris Elba also touted for the role. Even Edgar Wright says he has some ideas about where Bond could go next.

As for Johnson, his next big role is Black Adam, where he’ll play the title antihero. The release is planned for July 29, 2022.
