Boba Fett’s book was so secret that even Disney didn’t know about the Mandalorian reveal

Disney Plus ‘upcoming The Book of Boba Fett was so secretive prior to its unveiling on The Mandalorian that even its main cast and certain senior executives were unaware of the series’ existence.

In a new interview with THR, Boba Fett co-showrunner Robert Rodriguez (Sin City, Spy Kids, Alita: Battle Angel) revealed the secrecy surrounding the new show’s existence stunned many at the media giant, including a key player.

“Even Disney didn’t know we were going to drop it like this,” says Robert Rodriguez, co-showrunner of The Book of Boba Fett. “I’ve seen the inner workings and [Favreau and writer-producer-director Dave Filoni] kept this a secret from everyone. “

Disney + Spotlight: December 2021

Actress Ming-Na Wen, who plays Fett’s right-hand man Fennec Shand, originally believed she would sign up for another season of The Mandalorian after her character was revived in Season 2. It wasn’t until she appeared on the set that she realized the context was significantly different, thanks to Disney’s practice of disguising the names of major projects.

Key executives and all of the necessary business and legal matters at Disney still knew what was in the pipeline, but it speaks volumes about how much control Disney gives Favreau and Filoni over this gritty slice of the Star Wars universe.

Favreau and Filoni helped launch The Mandalorian, the first season of which helped make Disney Plus a success in 2019 and successfully fueled interest in the Star Wars universe after a critically divisive conclusion to the Skywalker trilogy.

As for the big tentpole films, fans had long known that Game of Thrones showrunners DB Weis and David Benioff, Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins, and The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson were all Worked on new Star Wars films until she left, allegedly due to creative differences with Disney.

The Book of Boba Fett follows the eponymous bounty hunter icon and his partner Fennec Shand, who claim the former Tatooine palace of Jabba the Hutt and are working to build an underworld empire. Disney will similarly launch several other Star Wars series on its streaming service in the future, including Obi-Wan Kenobi, Andor, Ahsoka, and more.

Boba Fett’s book is out on Disney Plus on December 29th. In the meantime, check out Disney’s new documentary that focuses on the creation of the Boba Fett character and his story across the Star Wars universe.
