The HBO Max version of Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) has apparently been censored from the original version found on the streamer and in theaters.

As reported by, HBO Max subscribers who start the DC movie are greeted with a message stating, “This movie has been modified from its original version as follows: it has been edited for content.”

Birds of Prey is rated R and shows language and violence throughout the film. As notes, “In one scene with Rosie Perez’s Detective Montoya, a sentence on her shirt is clearly edited, confirming the censorship of the trip.” The film, which starred both Margot Robbie and Ewan McGregor, now has a TV-14 rating. also writes that this wasn’t the first time a streamer offered a “tamer version of the movie”, as Netflix had the TV cut of Back to the Future II for a while before it was corrected.

“The blame lies with Universal, who somehow provided Netflix with an edited version of the film,” said writer Bob Gale The Hollywood reporter at the time. “I heard about it about 10 days ago from an eagle-eyed fan and had the studio fix it. The version that is now running is the uncensored, unedited original version.”

Birds of Prey: Compare how characters look over the years

Whether or not this was a bug remains to be seen, but we’ll update this story when the original version is restored.

Getting Birds of Prey on TV-14 is a big deal, as it was the first DCEU title to receive an R alongside the “Ultimate Edition” of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. After Birds of Prey, Zack Snyder’s Justice League and The Suicide Squad also received an R rating.
