Dark Horse Comics, the editor of Frank Miller’s Sin City, is part of the Embracer Group.
The popular publisher – the third largest comic book publisher in the USA – was taken over by the Embracer Group today as part of its rapid expansion many more companies in sight.
“I cannot express the excitement I feel as Dark Horse steps into this new chapter in our history,” said Mike Richardson, Dark Horse CEO. “The synergies that exist with the Embracer corporate network promise exciting new opportunities not only for Dark Horse, but also for the makers and companies with whom we work.”
The best comic series or graphic novel of 2021
Dark Horse Comics is also known for Alien, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Conan, and Star Wars Comics, while the Embracer Group has snapped up game studios. It currently owns Gearbox Entertainment, Koch Media, Saber Interactive and THQ Nordic, among others.
This move opens up a whole world of possibilities for the newly acquired comic book publisher.
“Dark Horse’s growing library has over 300 compelling intellectual traits,” the official statement said. “With a structure and a proven ability to produce intellectual property, collaborate with top creative talent, and create brands and global hits, Dark Horse has a strong position in a market where entertainment content is in high demand.”
The proof, it is said, lies in the pudding – the company has over 40 projects underway with Netflix, Amazon, Syfy, Sony, MGM, Universal and Warner Media. Dark Horse produces The Witcher comic series as well as cool memorabilia like the most recent one Geralt versus the Kikimora Statue representing the inaugural bout of The witcher Television series.
Of course, IP sharing goes both ways, with the Embracer Group keen to develop new games based on the characteristics of Dark Horse Comics.
“In addition, there is untapped potential in the development of games based on Dark Horse IP and considerable opportunities for synergies within the Embracer group, both within Dark Horse Comics and Dark Horse Entertainment.”
What will that entail? For now we have to wait and see. But with titles like The Mask, Time Cop, and Ghost, we could see some interesting new games in the years to come.
