The Batgirl cast is growing into several heavyweights and some unexpected stars, including Michael Keaton, JK Simmons and even Brendan Fraser.
So far it’s not quite the epic Bat-Family you might expect, but Batman movies have typically never reached the size of an Avengers ensemble. As the title suggests, Batgirl (premiering on HBO Max) follows the origin story of Barbara Gordon as a young caped crusader, heiress and student of Bruce Wayne’s crime-fighting empire. Written by Christina Hodson, author of Birds of Prey and Bumblebee, Batgirl follows Barbara Gordon as she “discovers” the Batgirl side of her identity.
Batgirl (specifically the Barbara Gordon version) was originally introduced in 1967’s Detective Comics #359 as the daughter of Commissioner James Gordon. Her role has fluctuated throughout the Batman continuity, most notably during The Killing Joke when she was shot and paralyzed by the Joker. How the Batgirl movie will do things

Batgirl: All cast members for the HBO Max movie so far
Leslie Grace as Batgirl/Barbara Gordon
Moviegoers will recognize Leslie Grace as Nina Rosario, star of Jon M. Chu and Lin Manuel Miranda in the heights. Prior to In the Heights, her career focused primarily on songwriting and music video performance, which earned her three Latin Grammy Award nominations.
“They put a little bit of themselves into each character, so doing my research has taught me a lot about Barbara that resonates with me,” Grace said entertainment tonight. She is someone who was underestimated even by her father. As the youngest child you are sometimes isolated from all the hard stuff and she is so eager to prove to everyone and herself that there are things she can handle.
Michael Keaton as Bruce Wayne/Batman
For the third time in his career, Michael Keaton slips into Batman’s black boots. Keaton previously played Bruce Wayne and his alter ego in Tim Burton’s Batman and Batman Returns, where he competed against Jack Nicholson’s Joker, Danny Devito’s Penguin, and Michelle Pfeiffer’s Catwoman.
Keaton’s involvement was announced back in December 2021, but it has already been confirmed that he will play Batman in The Flash movie. Considering Batman is a direct mentor to Barbara Gordon, he may have a bigger role in Batgirl. Keaton immersed himself in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with his role as Vulture in Spider-Man: Homecoming.
JK Simmons as Commissioner James Gordon
Comic adaptations are no stranger to Simmons. The actor has portrayed gruff news boss J. Jonah Jameson in several Spider-Man credits, and before that he even played Commissioner Gordon in Zack Snyder’s Justice League. He will return for Batgirl, presumably an overprotective father to Barbara Gordon and confidant to Batman, although that relationship could be tested if Bruce Wayne seeks to recruit Barbara for his crusade against crime.
Brendan Fraser as Garfield Lynns/Firefly
Moviegoers will recognize Fraser from his starring role in the Mummy franchise and a more recent revival in DC’s Doom Patrol as the racer and machine Cliff Steele/Robotman. Deadline originally reported that he will play Garfield Lynns aka Firefly, a pyro-obsessed villain with a long history in Batman history.
Fraser went on an extended hiatus but returned to acting, recently taking on roles for directors such as Darren Aronofsky and Martin Scorsese.
Jacob Scipio in an unknown role
Scipio’s career began in small television roles before landing roles in 2020’s Bad Boys For Life, 2019’s The Outpost and the upcoming Expendables 4. It is currently unknown what role he will play in Batgirl.
