Alcohol-free sparkling wine: here are the winners of the ÖKO-TEST

Sparkling drinks made from grape juice

Not every product can convince in the test. Two of the sparkling grape juices are “very good” and one is “good”. The non-alcoholic sparkling wine that arrived last failed with the rating “insufficient” (rating 6). The reason: Besides the added flavors and yeast extract, the testers also criticized the taste, smell and packaging, which were not clearly declared. In return, the loser is free of pesticides. Traces of pesticides were detected in the two sparkling grape juices which were rated “very good”.

The non-alcoholic winner are:

  • Heyden Fun Zero sparkling grape juice for around 5.50 euros (at the shop)
  • Trenz Trenzero for around 5.80 euros (at the shop)

They impress ÖKO-TEST with their clean, round and intense smell, and their taste is “sweet, fine acidity, harmonious acid-sugar ratio, very fruity”, according to the experts. The alcohol content is between 0.05 and 0.04% vol.

Sparkling drinks based on de-alcoholized wine

Non-alcoholic sparkling wine made from dealcoholized wine is more common in supermarkets or discounters. Of the 16 products tested, four performed “very well”.

The good news: three of the four winners are low-cost own brands. The following non-alcoholic sparkling wines rank first in this area:

  • Lidl Burg Schöneck without alcohol for around 2 euros (at the shop)
  • Rossmann Louis Fernandet without alcohol for around 3.30 euros (at the shop)
  • Edeka Schloss Königstein Weiss without alcohol for around 4.30 euros (at the shop)
  • Carl Graeger without alcohol for around 6 euros (at the shop)

Six other drinks are rated “good”, including well-known names like Rotkummel-Mumm or Söhnlein Rheingold. Four others are “satisfactory”, and the testers give the mark “sufficient” once. Here too, a glass fails: The Column Zero, Cuvée Blanc No. 1 sparkling without alcohol costs only 13 euros a bottle. The lab also found four pesticides here, including traces of dimethomorph and iprovalicarb. And the harsh acidity and unbalanced acid-sugar ratio also lead to point deductions.
